Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft e.V.

Promoting research integrity

As one of the largest research funding organisations in Europe and the central self-governing institution for science and research in Germany, primarily financed by public funds, the DFG is aware of its responsibility to promote and support research integrity.

For this reason, the DFG has long advocated honesty in research - and has issued the Code of Conduct “Guidelines for Safeguarding Good Research Practice”, an updated orientation framework for integrity in the German research landscape adopted by member organisations in 2019. In addition to this, the DFG has introduced a further building block for supporting research integrity in the form of an incident reporting system.

The DFG Research Integrity Incident Reporting System is an online tool that facilitates the structured submission of incident reports and protects the anonymity of complainants/ whistleblowers, thereby supporting efficient case handling.

In addition to raising allegations of research misconduct within the DFG’s area of responsibility, the system can also be used to report acts of corruption/ conflicts of interest related to DFG-funded research/ activities and the misuse of DFG grant funds.

“The DFG will pursue clarification of the reported facts confidentially while safeguarding the interests of the complainants/ whistleblowers and the persons affected by the allegations.”

In keeping with a culture of respectful and fair interaction, complainants/ whistleblowers are asked to use the system responsibly.

If you are unsure whether an observed incident constitutes misconduct related to DFG-funded research/ activities, the responsible staff members at the DFG Head Office will be happy to continue to advise you through the usual communication channels listed on the website.

The DFG thanks you for your assistance.

Yours sincerely,

Prof. Dr. Katja Becker, President & Dr. Heide Ahrens, Secretary General
